Patek Philippe 5711/1A-014 Nautilus
The Patek Philippe 5711/1A-014 Nautilus is the latest version of an essential sports replica mens watches coveted by many watch enthusiasts. Mark McArthur-Christie examines the ingredients of the olive green dial variant of this legendary watch (first released in 2021).
Patek Philippe Watch Review What do you think of when someone says "Patek Philippe"? A super complicated grand complication watch with a crazy perpetual calendar, a celestial dial, a chime mechanism and a tiny orrery that unfolds and operates with the push of a hidden button? The restrained Calatravas combined the essence of a watch into a simple, elegant single series of dials? Or maybe the no-nonsense Ref. 5711/1A Nautilus designed by Genta?
If you really were living in a very dark cave, you wouldn’t know that Patek Philippe has announced that they will be discontinuing the stainless steel Nautilus – and the corresponding rocket launch trajectory of second-hand prices. This green dial 5711 is the model’s swansong. Way to go, Planlevut.
Patek Philippe 5711/1A-014 Nautilus Design The design of the 5711 that went into production was so similar (if legend is to be believed) to Genta's original restaurant napkin sketch that it is perhaps best summed up as "deceptively simple." But there are a lot of tiny details that make it work. The bezel, which at first glance looks like a porthole, actually has eight subtle but unique facets that reflect light and reduce the weight of the otherwise thick piece of steel. The inside edge has the same facets, further reducing weight. Try covering the protrusion on the left side of the case with your hand; it's ugly now, isn't it? A visually balanced weight on the left side of the case, opposite the crown guard, balances the entire mechanism and makes it work properly. The crown guard itself then slopes downward, visually placing it snugly against your wrist. These bezel lines continue into the bracelet, again reducing its weight. replica watches swiss
Next, look at the combination of polished and satin finishes. Change the bezel surface to a polished finish and you're back to Slabtown. Brushed lifting and lightness, polished edges distinguish the bezel from the case and bracelet. This required 55 different hand-finished steps to complete. All in all, the entire watch is a case study in how "simple" and "simple" are not actually the same thing.
Patek Philippe’s Nautilus series has a lot of room for development. There are now 25 different versions of this watch. You can choose from a variety of materials including stainless steel (current company), rose gold, white gold or two-tone gold, and pair it with a watch strap or bracelet. But the overall design was only slightly revised in 2006, thirty years after the watch’s launch, which is true of the Genta’s original vision; in an industry that places a premium on “novelty”.
Patek Philippe 5711/1A-014 Nautilus Swan Song So what is different about the new Patek Philippe 5711/1A-014 Nautilus Swansong? This is the dial color. Now this may not seem like a big deal, but it is. Patek Philippe doesn’t change dial colors just for fun. The first new luxury replica Watches launched after the 30th anniversary in 2006 featured a blue, black gradient dial, followed by a silver-white dial in 2012 and a brown-to-black gradient on a rose gold model in 2015. This new Ref. 5711/1A-014 is what Patek Philippe calls “olive green”. It’s fascinating to see how the Patek Philippe team ended up designing this special color. In large organizations, such a change often requires an entire meeting – but is the original color suggestion so cost-effective that everyone agrees? Regardless, it fits in nicely with its Nautili counterparts.
Like the rest of the watch, the dial face has a simple visual device that enhances its height. Horizontal ridges allow light to pass through it, creating areas of darkness and shadow that change as the wrist moves. We suspect that olive green will suit just about any environment – just like the watch itself.
Patek Philippe Movement 26-330 SC Housed in the case of the Patek Philippe 5711/1A-014 Nautilus is the Caliber 26-330 SC movement that has been powering the Nautilus since 2019. Through the back of the display you can admire it in action; it's kind of beautiful. Evolved from cal. 324 SC (powering Calatravas, Aquanauts and other Nautili, among others), which runs at 28,800vph (4Hz), has a Spiromax hairspring and a Gyromax four-spoke, four-weight fine-tuning balance. It has 5 fewer parts at 212, but one more gem (for a total of 30). Although the movement has a day/week digital complication, there is no need for the restrained Nautilus dial, just a date. There is a single central rotor (just look at that engraving) and there is some really clever watchmaking in the winding system. The campaign also carried out hacking attacks. In fact, it sounds too basic - it has a "stop seconds" system. much better.
It’s also a very functional watch and a great example of Genta design. Despite the display back, the stainless steel case can easily be submerged up to 120 m underwater without any issues. As we often point out, considering that recreational divers rarely venture beyond 40 m, this shouldn't cause a problem for anyone who isn't Cousteau.
